Sunway Construction Bags International Award For Urban Planning And Mobility

KUALA LUMPUR, 21 October 2016 – Sunway Construction’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) – Sunway Line project has bagged the Urban Planning and Mobility Award at the 2016 International Road Federation (IRF) Global Road Achievement Awards at a special ceremony held during the 2nd IRF Asia Regional Congress & Exhibition.

The Award ceremony had recognised 12 innovative projects from around the world, demonstrating leadership across major road and highway disciplines. The selection was made by an international panel of senior road development specialists.

The 5.4 km BRT-Sunway Line is a private-public partnership (PPP) between Prasarana Malaysia Berhad and Sunway Berhad; with Sunway investing RM 123 million of the RM 634 million total to complete the project as part of its social responsibility. The BRT-Sunway Line is Malaysia’s first BRT project that runs across seven stations and has a Park n’ Ride facility. It is fully elevated and is recorded as the first-of-its-kind in the Malaysia Book of Records. Launched on June 2, 2015 by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, a fleet of 30 eco-friendly and disabled-friendly electric buses run on the system to service a population of 300,000, mitigating congestion and acting as the missing link to the existing KTM Komuter and Kelana Jaya Line LRT stations.

Sunway Construction (SunCon) had completed the project, from design to finish, within a challenging 27 months, three weeks ahead of schedule. This included converting a former sewer oxidation pond to a mechanised treatment plant, which is more efficient, occupies a smaller land area and reduces environmental impact to the surrounding area in terms of odour reduction and exposure of sewerage plant.

Other challenges faced including constructing the elevated structures through the road median and along densely populated areas while ensuring minimum disruption to the public and ensuring public safety.

Liew Kok Wing, Deputy Managing Director, Sunway Construction Group Berhad said, “We are humbled to be recognised by an international and prestigious panel of judges to be one of the 2016 IRF GRAA winners. The BRT-Sunway Line project demonstrates the best of our capabilities as an integrated design and build contractor for buildings and infrastructure projects.”
