Renovation Contractors Need Registration, says CIDB

KUALA LUMPUR, 16 June: The Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) has reminded homeowners to use the services of contractors legally registered with CIDB for house renovations.

CIDB chief executive Datuk Ahmad Asri Abdul Hamid said the reminder was to prevent homeowners from being cheated as the quality of construction and safety was at risk when using the services of a contractor not registered with CIDB.

“CIDB has received complaints from homeowners who have been cheated by unregistered contractors who did not provide a letter of agreement.

“This results in renovations being carried out casually and work not being completed on time although cash advance has been paid by the owner of the house,” he said in a statement here today.

Based on statistics released by the Tribunal for Consumer Claims Malaysia which operates under the Domestic Trade, Co-Operatives And Consumerism Ministry (KPDNKK), it was found that 179 cases of dispute involving home renovations with claims of nearly RM2 million were received last year.

As of last April, the Bureau received 76 dispute cases nationwide involving claims to the tune of more than RM782,000.
