30 November, ISKANDAR PUTERI – Medini Iskandar Malaysia Sdn Bhd (MIM) urban park development won another distinguished award for its Edible Park, from the Malaysian Institute of Planners Planning Excellence Awards (MIPPEA) 2018. Dr James Tee, Managing Director / Chief Executive Officer of MIM received the Winner Award for Placemaking and Public Space (Private Sector) Category at a gala dinner held yesterday in Kuala Lumpur. Organised by the Malaysian Institute of Planners (MIP), the MIPPEA acknowledges projects and initiatives made by planners and property industry players in Malaysia.
The 5-acre Edible Park is one of MIM’s 46 urban park developments in Medini City, the Central Business District of Iskandar Puteri. MIM takes pride in delivering a ‘city in a park’ concept that is aligned with its green and sustainability development plan. The 46 urban parks total up to a land area of 342 acres where each park is carefully designed and themed, adding vibrancy to the entire Medini City development spanning over an area of 2,200 acres. The Edible Park is an edible landscape designed to build community around conscious and sustainable living. The Edible Park is equipped with a workshop studio, café, designed gardens and organic urban farm, all meticulously planned to allow residents, workers and visitors alike to experience Medini as a city built within a park.
The Edible Park was officially opened in March 2018, where two major festivals related to sustainable living has been held in March namely the Edible Festival and Harvest Festival in October this year. These festivals, touted as the biggest green living event in Iskandar Puteri, have inspired individuals to make sustainable choices resulting positive outcomes on health and the environment. The Edible Park hosts a series of nature related workshops every weekend, and a green market held on every first Saturday of the month selling fresh green and organic produce, plant-based food and products.
“MIM is honoured to be named as the winner in the ‘Placemaking & Public Space’ category. Winning this prestigious award is a testament to the fact that our Edible Park is recognised as a mark of excellence not only because of its impressive physical design but also because of the weekly nature-related activities held there, which have successfully attracted and connected individuals of all ages and backgrounds. Our Edible Park promotes social inclusivity and encourages park goers to experience and learn through recreation and interactions with nature. In this way, we inculcate sustainable values that serve as a foundation for shaping a socially responsible community,” said Dr James Tee.
Chris Parry, JOGreen Enterprise Founder and Edible Park curator said, “It’s been a privilege to see Edible Park realised, then enjoy positive response from the public to our programming, and now recognition with this prestigious industry award.”
Iskandar Puteri City Council Mayor, Datuk Haji Adib Azhari Daud applauded MIM for its green living initiative and he said, “MIM showcases a valuable sustainable practice rarely matched by developments elsewhere in the region. They promote a township that is not only smart, modern and vibrant, but also a city that promotes a healthy and balanced lifestyle within Iskandar Puteri.”
