iDEA 2018 celebrates and recognises 35 top developers and developments in Malaysia
The atmosphere at the Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur grand ball room on 15 November 2018 resembled a star studded ceremony reminiscent of the Oscars with over 500 property developers and industry professionals dressed in their finest. In essence, the iProperty Development Excellence Awards (iDEA) held the same significance of globally-renowned award ceremonies, as it honours the country’s best developers and developments.
Held for the second time, the iDEA awards celebrated the highest levels of achievement and outstanding developments in 14 highly-regarded categories in real-estate. Although a formal affair, the mood at the event especially during the cocktail reception held prior, was light-hearted and casual with many industry professionals socialising with one another. Still despite the open display of camaraderie there is no denying that those in attendance were eagerly waiting to see who would walk away with an iDEA 2018 award that night.
iDEA was created by iProperty.com.my, the consumer brand of REA Group Asia in Malaysia and Malaysia’s No. 1 property site to recognise the outstanding performance and exceptional work in the Malaysian property and real-estate industry. The success of the first award ceremony held in 2017 signified the importance of the awards and the value it holds to both developers as well as consumers.
In his speech, David Mawer, General Manager, iProperty.com.my said:

This year, the awards consisted of 13 categories, which were judged on 28th August 2018 by a panel of 6 top industry judges with expertise in the disciplines Building & Landscape Architecture, Engineering, Valuation, Law and Map Making.
The judging committee consisted of:
- Architect Ezumi Harzani Bin Ismail – President of Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM)
- Prof. Landscape Architect Dr. Osman Mohd Tahir – President of Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia (ILAM)
- Dato’ Surveyor Lau Wai Seang – President of Royal Institute of Surveyors Malaysia (RISM) Session 2017-2018;
- Engineer Ahmad Izdihar Bin Supaat – President of Malaysia Green Building Confederation (MGBC) Session 2016-2018
- Ho Chin Soon, Chairman of Ho Chin Soon Research
- Dato’ Seri Matthew Yeoh, Co-Founder of ASEAN Legal Alliance.
Architect Sarly Adre Sarkum, Deputy President of Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM), with years of judging experience in various property awards, served as the award convenor.
More than 25 leading developers across Malaysia were shortlisted with projects ranging from residential, industrial, and township developments from Northern region, central region and Southern region. The submissions for iDEA 2018 were split into two parts to give recognition to both completed developments and developments that are still under construction. Ever evolving, iDEA 2018 also saw the introduction of new award categories – Best Transit-Oriented Development and Best Industrial Development.
What sets iDEA apart from other industry awards is that it also boasts the People’s Choice Award category that allows the members of the public to vote for their Top 10 favourite developers. The voting process, which was carried out online from 15th to 28th August 2018 attracted thousands of voters. All results from the People’s Choice Award category and the other 13 judged categories were independently verified by the award balloting partner, PwC Malaysia.
As the evening got underway with an exquisite dinner service and music provided by a live jazz band, the event truly shifted into gear once the awards ceremony officially began.
On this evening, Matrix Concepts Holdings Berhad emerged the biggest winner at iDEA 2018 as they walked away with four awards including Best Township Development for their flagship project, Bandar Sri Sendayan in Seremban.
Mutiara Rini Sdn Bhd, a member of Boustead Holdings Berhad, clinched the Development of the Year title for One Cochrane Residences, while Mah Sing Group Berhad picked up the Best Affordable Development for Savanna Executive Suites.
In the two new categories this year, R&F Princess Cove by R&F Development Sdn Bhd picked up the award for Best Transit-Oriented Development while i-Park @ Senai Airport City by Ipark Development Sdn Bhd bagged the Best Industrial Development.
Following the awards ceremony, Dato’ Sr. Lau Wai Seang, President of Royal Institute of Surveyors Malaysia 2016-2018 (RISM) summed up the awards perfectly:
“Credible developers, quality projects and location, are value. With all the checks and balances in place, you can be assured that only the best and most deserving developments are recognised in iDEA awards.”
A total of 35 winners went home with awards on the night. There is no denying that iDEA 2018 once again delivered a fitting celebration of the many achievements and accomplishments in the Malaysian property sector. By acknowledging those whose work has stood out from the crowd, iDEA 2018 showcases not only what a fantastic year it was for the Malaysian property market but also the exciting future the sector will build towards in the years ahead.
