Ampang was one of the earliest areas in the Klang Valley that opened for tin mining and has since grown into one of the most matured and desired townships around the Kuala Lumpur City Centre. Its boom can be attributed to its main road Jalan Ampang.

Built and developed in the 1880s, it is one of the oldest roads in Klang Valley. It led the tin mining village of Ampang into the heart of the city along the Ampang River and was a catalyst for economic and social development in the area. This heritage is why it was and still is the home for buildings of some of the earliest financial institutions in this country, such as Bangunan Chartered Bank, HSBC Bank, Menara AIA and Menara Great Eastern.

Fast-forward to today, the road has played a big part in Ampang’s development from its simple roots into one of the most desired neighbourhoods in the city. So, why is Ampang such a popular destination for people who want to live around the heart of the city? Here are some reasons.

1. Accessibility

Jalan Ampang was the backbone of the road system linking Ampang to the city centre before the completion of the Ampang–Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway (AKLEH) in 2001. It still provides good access to some of the more popular parts of the city.

Its unique location also allows for easy access to Jalan Tun Razak, one of the main roads in and out of the city as well as Jalan Ulu Klang, which connects with Hulu Kelang areas such as Setapak.

2. Commercial & entertainment hub

Jalan Ampang is one of the main roads in the KL City Centre, traversing some of the essential business and lifestyle hubs of the city. It provides direct access to the Petronas Twin Towers area, allowing residents easy access to popular malls such as City Square, Suria KLCC and Great Eastern Mall during weekends.

Residents of Ampang do not need to brave traffic or long journey time to get right into the heart of the city for a day of shopping and fun. Some of the most popular and important business hubs and buildings still sit on Jalan Ampang, which is why it continues to be very popular among young working professionals who are looking for a little more energy from where they live. The popular super club Zouk KL also sits on Jalan Tun Razak, a relative stone’s throw from Ampang, giving residents easy access to some nightlife.

3. Access to public transport

On top of the great accessibility, Ampang also provides residents with superb public transport options so they can easily travel to other parts of the Klang Valley, hassle-free. Depending on which part of Ampang they live in, residents can head to LRT stations such as LRT Ampang, LRT Pandan Indah on the Ampang line and the station in KLCC.

4. Steady demand

Despite a median price of about 934k, Ampang continues to have a compound annual growth rate at a median price of 13.3% (https://www.propertyguru.com.my/selangor/ampang). So, it may not be cheap to invest in a  property here, but there are decent gains if you have the financial capability. This makes the location not only attractive to people who want to live in Ampang, but also for investors who are looking for a good, steady neighbourhood to invest in.
