Waterproof paint is either semi-waterproof or completely waterproof and can be used indoors in bathrooms or basements or outside the home on objects. It is often made with latex, oil, or concrete base, all of which can provide a strong waterproof seal. Waterproof paints are made to protect your house or any other structure from all common problems. It can protect structures and arm them against the harsh elements of nature. Now that the rainy season is continuing, and the days are getting harder, the golden question is “Does waterproof paintwork?”. Well, the short answer is yes! A waterproofing coat works well, but it does not fix cracks or solve drainage problems around your foundation. Even this paint cannot fix everything on its own. Cracks in a basement wall or other openings near bathroom fixtures, for example, need to be sealed.

Just like other paints, waterproof versions need to be applied to clean, dry surfaces to adhere properly. It can protect structures and strengthen them so that they can withstand the harsh elements of nature. This type of paint is water repellent and is usually made of latex, concrete, or oil. It is also suitable for all types of surfaces, from plastics to cement and wood.

If you have drainage issues, do not just paint a special paint on your basement walls and consider the job done. Water repellent paints may do a good job of sealing the pores of the concrete, but they cannot repair cracks or major structural damage. It should be the final layer of interior repairs and part of the process of fixing your foundation both inside and out! Waterproofing paint can protect your basement if the concrete allows moisture to pass through during rain or snowmelt. But the best waterproofing solutions start on the exterior of your home. The best prevention is to prevent water from entering your foundation in the first place – waterproofing paint is just an extra layer of protection!

Waterproofing paint is durable and in most cases, will last a lifetime, no matter what type of surface it is. But some professionals consider waterproof paints to be a short-term solution to their problem. They are not suitable for basement walls and will probably fail in six months to two years.

Despite that, no paint can permanently withstand the hydrostatic pressure of groundwater pressing against a foundation. And there is another aspect to consider. When the foundation paint starts to crumble (as it inevitably will), you’ll probably have to strip it off before you can apply a new coat. If you do not, the fresh paint will not stick to the walls.

Waterproofing paint can be applied to previously painted surfaces, much like acrylic wall paint, with the main difference being that it provides better water resistance. You must choose a breathable formulation that is specifically designed to allow walls to breathe and wick away moisture.

When looking for waterproof paint, you may find yourself in a bit of a minefield. Most paints claim to be waterproof to some degree, and yes, most paints are waterproof to some degree. But the real question is: how waterproof is the paint? There is no chart to guide us in choosing the right paint for you, but we can help you understand what level of waterproofing is required for what type of project.

  • Epoxy paint

Also known as poly epoxy, this paint is made from epoxy-based resin. Epoxy paint is majority used in industries like commercial, industrial, construction, agriculture, and electronics. Epoxy paint is five times thicker than other floor paints and has the advantage of being permanently adherent, durable, waterproof, easy to clean, long-lasting, and resistant (acid, rust, chemicals, heat).

Epoxy paint takes longer to dry in high humidity and cool temperatures. After 24 hours the paint is suitable for light foot traffic and after three days for heavy foot traffic. If you allow more time, such as a week, for drying, the paint is suitable for premature heavy traffic and car tires. If necessary, use a mild detergent for cleaning before a month.

Best for hard surfaces indoors and out, best for garage floors and concrete. It protects against hot tires, automotive fluids, and most household chemicals and provides a beautiful finish on driveways, garage floors, patios, walkways, and interior concrete surfaces. Epoxy coating is a must for swimming pools.

  • Acrolein elasticized paint

This paint is used on surfaces made of concrete. It protects against the growth of mould, bacteria, and mildew caused by moisture. However, be careful when using acrolein because it is made of a toxic substance that damages the lungs, throat, and skin.

It is not waterproof paint unless we combine acrolein with acrylic paint, but when the two are combined, it creates a waterproof paint that we can use as needed. It is used on concrete surfaces, cinders, and stone surfaces.

  • Acrylic paint

There are two types of acrylic paints: traditional acrylic paints and modern acrylic paints. The traditional acrylic paints of the last 50 years dry very quickly, but the newest acrylic paint does not dry as quickly. The newest acrylic paint is made by Golden and Chroma. They are water-based paints, which means they are diluted with water and are less toxic than acrylic paints. They are mainly used by artists.

They clean up easily with soap and water. These paints are mainly used for home decoration, they are used for paintings that look beautiful for a long time, they are also used for wood but here more than one coat is required.

Besides that, acrylic paint is used indoors and outdoors on concrete blocks, poured concrete, wood, masonry, clay tile, and stucco. Acrylic paints do not require special tools, they can be easily used with rollers, brushes, and with spray. Once dry, they are waterproof and can also be used on your clothing with ease. They are also known as artist paints because painters have used these paints for their beautiful paintings.

  • Masonry paint

Masonry paint is made of ceramic and latex. It is mainly used for concrete/slag, brick, cement, stone, and for things like hardboards. It absorbs water and other liquids, and the surfaces can be easily cleaned with soap and water.

This paint is meant for outdoor use. If you think you want to use this paint inside your home, you should read the cons right away or ask an expert. I recommend that if you use it inside, that you only use it on concrete floors. Masonry paint makes surfaces waterproof, stain-resistant, durable and provides long-lasting protection to exterior walls. It is used on surfaces such as masonry, vinyl, metal, wood, metal, and plastic. Do not use it in water.

Masonry Paint is environmentally friendly, waterproof, stain-resistant, all colours are available in stores or online, including 5-gallon cans. If you have used this paint on your house walls, you do not have to worry about repainting it for the next 12 years, the paint dries quickly. It is also UV resistant, which protects the walls from peeling, cracking, and flaking and provides many years of protection.

Epoxy paint is the most waterproof paint and is commonly used for basement or garage floors because the paint is durable and water repellent. Epoxy resin is a type of plastic resin that is added to paint to create a fast-curing bond when applied to a surface. The resin forms a durable, waterproof seal that adheres to stone, metal and other surfaces like concrete and cement. According to the Basement Flooring website, the most durable epoxy paints tend to be the most expensive. However, a water-based epoxy can be a more cost-effective solution that is durable enough for home use.

Water repellent paints require priming, especially if you are going to apply the paint outside. Know that moisture is your worst enemy when using waterproof paint.  It is the second most recurring problem after poor substrate preparation, namely failure to prime the appropriate parts and substrate before applying the waterproofing membrane.

Application of the waterproofing membrane must be done within a limited time frame before the epoxy has cured for more than 24 hours. Residual moisture epoxy primers are designated as moisture suppressive coatings (MSC) and the product must have a certified test result following the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) E96 Standard Test Methods for Water Vapour Permeability of Materials.

6 best waterproofing paint Malaysia: Walls, concrete, and woods

Here are the 6 best waterproofing paint in Malaysia if you’re looking for one.

1. Best waterproof paint for interior walls

Waterproof paint for interior walls, such as acrylic paint, also works against dampness. First, you need to determine if the dampness is coming from the wall, the floor, or the humidity of the room. Peeling wallpaper or crumbling plaster is a clear sign of dampness, as is dampness in the skirting board. You also need to find the source of the dampness – is it a leak, rising damp, poor insulation? If you do not fix the cause, you’ll be dealing with damp forever. If the skirting is affected, you’ll need to remove the skirting, treat the wall behind it and then replace it.

2. Best waterproof paint for exterior walls

There are several waterproofing products available today to help homeowners protect their homes from outside moisture. Here are a few products to consider:

  • Concrete waterproofing coating

A cement-like product that permanently adheres to concrete and masonry; can be applied to any surface, including painted walls

  • Silicate-based concrete sealer

It reacts with the components of masonry and concrete to form a water-repellent coating; this sealer can only be used on unsealed/unpainted walls

  • Waterproofing paint

It is similar to acrylic wall paint with the main difference being that it provides better waterproofing performance. It is very important to choose a breathable formulation that is specifically designed to allow walls to breathe and wick away moisture. The product can be applied to surfaces that have already been painted.

3. Best waterproof paint for concrete

Epoxy paint is a common waterproof paint for concrete as it is more durable than some of the other options, adheres well to porous substrates, and is very water-resistant. You must use breathable paint for basement walls. Another option is to waterproof the basement. This involves applying waterproof paint to the walls and floors to make the basement watertight.

4. Best waterproof paint for woods

Whether it’s fencing, siding, decking, flooring, or garden furniture, wood needs protection from the elements, just like your concrete. However, such impregnation is not to be confused with varnishing.

  • Varnishing wood

An excellent way to extend the life of your furniture, panelling, or flooring. It reduces the risk of abrasion and protects against dirt. If you want to do this, we have varnishes from Blackfriar, Coo-Var, and Timberex that come in polyurethane, glaze, wax, and more. You can find the entire selection in our ‘Wood Finishes’ section.

  • Hydron Protective System wood sealer

Can be applied to bare or rejuvenated wood to revitalize and protect it. It is colourless, does not interfere with the current colour tone, resists oil, wood, dirt, and grime, and lasts up to 10 years. It’s even weather and UV-resistant.

5. Best waterproofing paint for roofs

Roof waterproofing can help prevent leakage problems by adding an extra layer of protection to the roof to prevent water from entering the building through the roof surface. There are different types of waterproofing methods for different types of roofs;

  • Liquid membranes

Thin coatings are applied by spraying, rolling, or troweling.

  • Bituminous coating

It is a type of coating used for waterproofing and as a flexible protective layer. It is flexible and protects against water and can serve as a fibre reinforcement.

  • Bituminous waterproofing membranes

They are available as a burn-on membrane and a self-adhesive membrane. There are two types of bituminous membranes, the exposed and the covered types.

  • Polyurethane liquid waterproofing

It is used for flat roofs that are exposed to the elements.

6. Best waterproofing paint for shower

In most cases, a latex enamel will be sufficient for your bathroom and shower walls. Choose a semi-gloss or high-gloss colour rather than a smooth or eggshell colour. The glossier your paint is, the better it can repel water.
