Water theft by developer cost Syabas RM500,000

SHAH ALAM, Dec 18: Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas) has lost about RM500,000 in revenue from water as a result of water theft by a developer at a construction site in Setia Alam since 2010.

National Water Service Commission (SPAN) Corporate Communications Unit senior executive Loh Pit Mui said the developer’s irresponsible act was detected by a Syabas enforcement unit.

She said a Syabas and SPAN raid at a Precinct 12 construction site in Setia Alam here at about noon today revealed that the developer had installed a direct connection from the main pipe using a 32mm pipe illegally.

“The connection is to siphon water supply to the project site for construction works as well as for workers. A chlorine test conducted showed the water supply used was treated water,” she said when met by reporters at the construction site here today.

Loh said for cases which cannot be compounded, they would be charged in court under Section 123(1) of the Water Services Industry Act 2006 which provides for a fine not exceeding RM100,000 or jail not exceeding one year or both upon conviction.
