17 October, KUALA LUMPUR – Water that flows straight out of a tap is safe to drink without the need to be filtered, according to Dr Xavier Jayakumar.

The Water, Land and Natural Resources Minister gave this assurance in Parliament, saying all water originating from the water plants nationwide is safe to be consumed by the public.

“Yes, water from taps nationwide can be consumed. There’s no problem. If there is any problem, that’s a local issue, and not because of the water plants.

“The water that runs from all our plants in Malaysia is 100% safe to drink,” he told the Dewan Rakyat, here.

Xavier was responding to a supplementary question by Datuk Seri Ismail Mohamed Said (BN-Kuala Krau) on what measures were being taken by the government to ensure the public can drink water straight from the tap.

Curious by the answer he received, Ismail then asked if Xavier himself drinks water straight from the tap, to which the minister said: “Indeed I do”.
