10 August, SUNWAY ISKANDAR – A total of 250 Sunway volunteers from around its various business divisions around Johor including senior management personnel convened at Sunway International School’s multipurpose hall in Sunway Iskandar for a three-hour food-packing marathon today, to deliver a total of 80,000 meals.

The volunteers, who packed the multipurpose hall, formed 14 lines to pack specially formulated nutrition-dense dehydrated meals comprising rice, lentils, dehydrated vegetables and a flavouring mix including 23 essential vitamins and minerals.

This event is the third of installation of the five-part #sunwayforgood Rise Against Hunger meal packing initiative, which aims to end hunger in the most undernourished communities.

The five-part initiative will see a total of 1,630 Sunway Group volunteers pack a total 500,000 meals across the country. The meal-packing events are hosted in five locations. About 100,000 meals had already been packed at Sunway University in conjunction with the Worldchefs Congress & Expo 2018 and another 120,000 at Sunway Medical Centre in Klang Valley.

More than 250 Sunway Staff and Sunway International School students participated in Rise Against Hunger- Meal Packing Session. The team managed to pack 80,000 meals in less than 3 hours.

Following the Sunway International School meal-packing event in Johor, another 100,000 will be packed in Sunway Lost World Hotel in Ipoh, and 100,000 Sunway Hotel Seberang Jaya, Penang.

While Sunway Group has been concentrating its efforts in Malaysia in the past three years, this year, Sunway Group has extended its reach for the initiative which was started in 2014, to the some of the communities who are most in need in Cambodia and Timor Leste.

A total of 250,000 meals will be distributed around the most poverty-stricken communities in Malaysia, 100,000 meals will be delivered to homeless shelters and orphanages in Cambodia, and the remaining 150,000 meals to refugee communities in Timor Leste.

The meals will be delivered through six NGOs – the Rotary Centennial Club, Johor; Sahabat Orang Asli; Rotary Club KK South, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah; Rotary Club Kuching, Sarawak; Salesians Mission for Timor Leste and One2One Cambodia.

President of Rise Against Hunger, Tiki Keh, said, “We believe that the world has enough production potential and distribution capability to end hunger in 2030. We are thankful to Sunway for helping us grow the movement by creating educated advocates and volunteers who are mobilizing even more resources toward these proven poverty solutions.”
