JOHOR BHARU, 9 June– Sunway Property in partnership with the Majlis Bandaraya Johor Bahru (MBJB) have launched the ‘Friends of Laman Tasik Pandan’ community initiative. The initiative is aimed at preserving the sustainability of the park, which was recently upgraded by Sunway Property together with the local authorities. Built in 2013, Laman Tasik Pandan was home to many leisure activities for the families within the neighbourhood.
However due to wear and tear as well as vandalism, the condition of the park deteriorated drastically and soon became a dangerous meeting place for undesirable activities. The park also succumbed to being a breeding ground for mosquitoes due to the abandoned and stagnant lake. “When you think about it, a healthy and functional recreational park plays an integral role in fostering the relationships of the people within a community and staying connected to nature.
As a true believer of ‘Living Sunway, Living Community’, we are delighted to be part of this joint effort to contribute to the benefit of the Southern community. The restoration of Laman Tasik Pandan also helps strengthen our commitment as a Master Community Developer in providing our communities a better and safer environment to live, learn, work and play in a well-connected environment,” said Gerard Soosay, CEO of Sunway Iskandar. Under Sunway Group’s CSR efforts.
Laman Tasik Pandan was transformed from a rundown family location to a beautiful community park enjoyed by all. Working together with MBJB and the Sunway Property arm, the renovation project was carried out across a year with a total investment of RM2 million.
The upgrading and restoration works to the park began in October 2014 and completed in September 2015 before it was officially handed over to MBJB. The restoration work done by Sunway Property includes replacement of damaged walkways, surau, fences, MBJB office, shelters, public washrooms, fitness equipment, children’s play equipment as well as a picnic table.
Additionally, further amenities were integrated to the park such as a new jogging track, basketball court, playground, boardwalk around the lake and the main entrance signage. “The local authorities do invest in upgrading and sustaining public parks however the irresponsibility in attitude of certain people have resulted in damaging park conditions for the community as a whole.
The partnership with Sunway in revitalising Laman Tasik Pandan and bringing forth the Friends of Laman Tasik Pandan initiative is a programme we wish to emulate in other recreational parks within the city,” shared Tuan Haji A. Rahim Bin Haji Nin, Mayor of MBJB. The ‘Friends of Laman Tasik Pandan’ consists of various agents who have made it their responsibility to ensure the welfare and maintenance of the park is well-kept for members of the community to enjoy.
Frequent patrolling efforts, neighbourhood events, sports activities and other recreational programmes will be put in place by the committee to foster the camaraderie of all neighbours alike in a safe and lively place. As part of Sunway’s commitment in nurturing sustainability to the community, the group also further introduced green elements with the plantation of 50 trees around the park.
One of the key highlights of the initiative also included the transplantation of the 100-year-old cotton tree which was relocated to a more strategic location within the Sunway Lenang Heights development area
