KUALA LUMPUR: 2,000 Malaysians from all walks of life took part in the inaugural Merdeka cycling event at Sunsuria City on 30th July.
Jointly organized by Sunsuria Berhad (“Sunsuria”) and Star Media Group in conjunction with the upcoming National Day celebrations, the event kicked off at the newly launched Sunsuria City Celebration Centre with the crowd singing ‘Negaraku’.
Launched in April, the Sunsuria City Celebration Centre fosters unity and nation-building among Malaysians, as it is a venue for people to gather for festive occasions and community functions.
“We at Sunsuria believe in promoting unity, as it is our country’s greatest strength. Our continued development and prosperity as a nation depends on our shared values as Malaysians, regardless of race or religion. Let us unite to build our nation so that our children and grandchildren can inherit a better Malaysia,” said Sunsuria’s Executive Chairman Datuk Ter Leong Yap, who is also President of the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia.
With its intricate network of pedestrian-friendly landscaped walkways and bicycle lanes, the 525-acre Sunsuria City provided a scenic route for cyclists at the event.
The first event, 30km Competitive Ride category – was flagged off by Ter and Sunsuria’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Koong Wai Seng. Ter and Koong later joined in with other VVIP and VIP guests, key influencers and celebrities such as Amber Chia, DJ Dave, Kavita Kaur, radio deejays Lin and Tyzo of Suria FM, as well as Jason and Anson of 988 FM joined in on the pedaling fun by participating in the 5.5km Family Ride category.
The event concluded with a prize-giving ceremony for the category winners and a lucky draw.
Sunsuria believes that apart from encouraging Malaysians to embrace healthy and sustainable lifestyle, it also reflects Sunsuria City’s core principles of Smart, Livable and Sustainable (SLS), said Ter.
“Apart from promoting national unity and patriotism, this is a chance for families and the community from all walks of life to raise awareness for a healthier and more environmentally-friendly lifestyle. Everyone – without exception – is responsible for the well-being of our nation and we each have a role to play”, he said.
