JOHOR, 21 January 2016 – In the momentous award ceremony held at the Royale Chulan, Kuala Lumpur on 14 December 2015, Seri Alam Properties Sdn Bhd (SAP) was awarded the Exceptional Achievement in Environmental Performance and Johor Green Award by YB Dato Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment and Guest of Honour YAB Dato’ Seri Dr Ahmad Zahidi Hamidi, Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia.
“SAP realises that creating a sustainable township is key to our development. As part of our Greening the City plan, we have allocated approximately 11.65% or 438.35 acres in our developments for green areas and parks to create a greener environment,” said Freddie Lee, SAP’s Executive Director.
“In addition to the allocation, SAP has embarked on various initiatives to promote green living within our township. Apart from making our corporate office a green building, we have also exercised other green initiatives such as environmental awareness campaigns for schools and the local community. We also upgraded landscapes, started tree planting campaigns, built our own nursery, as well as the establishment of a 33km long bicycle lane to encourage alternative means of transportation. Our mission if for Bandar Seri Alam to be rated as a Green Garden City by 2020,” he added.
SAP participated in the large enterprise category for the PMHA, running along with a total of 150 companies who submitted their entries for the awards. SAP was shortlisted to the last 60 companies, which was then processed to the two-stage assessment.
In the first stage or Stage I, which is the Assessment of Submission, SAP had to provide key information in fourteen broad areas based on key principles issued by the International Chamber of Commerce’s (ICC) Business Charter for Sustainable Development which comprise of:-
1. Leadership, priority and commitment
2. Managing environmental issues
3. Training and communication
4. Legal and other compliance
5. Environmental emergencies
6. Environmental improvement
7. Produce/service communication
8. Employee participation
9. Supply chain
10. Environmental social program
11. Environmental accounting
12. Life cycle analysis
In Stage II, a visit by official assessors to the development site will be made to verify the submission in Stage I whereby SAP had to provide additional facility information such as the site layout as well as corporate history for assessment.
“The whole process of preparation and submission of data right up to the site assessment took approximately 4 months. I am glad that all the hard work had paid off in view that we have spent countless hours in this exercise. I am also pleased to share that SAP is the only developer in Malaysia that has obtained the Exceptional achievement,” Lee said.
With the honour of two awards, SAP hopes it will a catalyst for the company to work harder in achieving a green and sustainable township, with efforts in the midst to create two more town parks for the community in addition to the two town parks which have been completed.
