13 March, GEORGE TOWN – The Penang government will continue to conduct regular audits on the tenants of the People’s Housing Programme (PPR) in the state to see whether they are still eligible to occupy the units or have been disqualified.
The State Housing, Town, Country Planning and Local Government Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said there is need to ensure that PPR applicants were really eligible because the waiting list for PPR applications in the state is increasing annually and now stands at 1,137 applications.
It is our responsibility as the state government, and the tenant must understand our responsibility as the state government. We do not have an adequate supply of PPR flats, Penang has the lowest number of PPR units throughout Malaysia.
I need to make room for those who have been on the waiting list for a long time. There are (applicants) who have been waiting for more than 10 to 11 years. I advise tenants who are aware and know they are disqualified to come and discuss how they can upgrade their status, he told a press conference, here today.
He advised those who have been disqualified from occupying the PPR units to update their status so they can be prioritised for other categories of housing offered by the state government.
Meanwhile, Jagdeep said the five familes who staged a protest at the Komtar building when 22 families in PPR Taman Manggis were ordered to vacate their rental units on March 6 ended their protests today after they agreed to accept the new rental offer from the state government.
The issue started when the 22 families were ordered to vacate their rental units for breaching the rental terms.
