Kuala Lumpur, September 19 — NS BlueScope Malaysia (BlueScope) in collaboration with JKKK Kampung Bukit Kapar and KPJ Klang Specialist Hospital recently organised a free health camp for the community of Kapar, Selangor. The event was graced by Yang Berhormat Tuan G. Manivannan, Member of Parliament Kapar; Masadan Mohsin, Kapar; Yang Berhormat Dr. Hj. Abd. Rani Osman, Adun Meru; J. Kalaiyarasan, Vice President of Human Resource NS BlueScope Malaysia Sdn Bhd and Fiona Lee, Vice President of Marketing and External Affairs NS BlueScope Malaysia Sdn Bhd.
NS BlueScope, in its continuous efforts as one of the world’s most socially responsible steel manufacturers organised the health camp, providing free basic health screening services to the community of Kapar in conjunction with “World Heart Day” aims at encouraging its community to be socially responsible while being educated on heart health and focus on key areas to minimise heart disease risks and maximise cardiovascular health which follows suit to the company and its emphasis on health & safety as top priority to its employees and community.
World Heart Day takes place annually on 29 September every year and is a chance for people around the world to take part in the world’s biggest intervention against cardiovascular disease (CVD). According to the National Health and Morbidity Survey 2011’s statistics, Coronary Heart Disease is the no.1 killer in Malaysia, accounting for 25.4% of the total mortality rate.
YB Tuan G. Manivannan who commended the efforts of NS BlueScope, said in his speech, “It is a very humbling experience to see a company like NS BlueScope give back to its surrounding community and I would like to thank NS BlueScope for working with its community members to organise an event like this. The health camp provides an opportunity for the community to be heart conscious and encourages them to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases by choosing healthy eating habits and adopting physical activities.”
J. Kalaiyarasan, who spoke on behalf of Pongsak Padungkarn, the Country President of Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei of NS BlueScope, said during the opening speech, “NS BlueScope has been operating in Kapar for 20 years and saw this initiative as an opportunity to showcase our commitment in encouraging and empowering everyone to live a healthier lifestyle. This health camp is aimed at providing health screening to our friends here in Kapar. We see this as an opportunity to work together to further encourage a socially responsible community as well as to encourage a healthy lifestyle.”
KPJ Klang Specialist Hospital provided free health screenings, blood pressure screening, glucose level screening, body mass index screening, and cholesterol level screening for 300 Kapar community members. During the health camp, NS BlueScope sponsored gifts to children aged five to nine years who participated in a colouring contest.
The Health Camp is a part of NS BlueScope’s longstanding initiative “BlueScope Steel and Community” Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme for the Kapar Community, which is in line with the company’s Corporate Bond to care for the environment, respect local values and encourage involvement in the communities it operates in.
