31 July, KUALA LUMPUR – The Housing and Local Government Ministry is reviewing the price of the People’s Housing Project (PPR) unit following the proposal for bigger living quarters from its current size of 600 sq ft to 900 sq ft.
Its minister Zuraida Kamaruddin said it was due to the financial implications in terms of construction costs and subsidies to be borne by the government following the increase in size of the residential unit.
We are very careful in terms of price to ensure it will not be wasteful, she said that at the Dewan Rakyat sitting today.
She was answering a question from Nurul Izzah Anwar (PH-Permatang Pauh) on the justification to increase the size of the PPR housing unit as well as the implications on the price.
Zuraida said the ministry was sensitive to the wishes of the people, especially those with large number of households, to live in bigger and comfortable homes.
In the meantime, she said the federal government would also draw a policy that would require the state government to provide bigger land for the construction of PPR houses and other basic amenities.
With this condition, it will lower the prices (of PPR unit) and will not affect the prices of low-cost houses, she said.
The ministry would also discuss with the Bank Negara for flexibility in terms of bank loan facility to PPR house applicants, she said.
