4 January – As the year 2020 drew to a close, IOI Properties Group Berhad (IOIPG) organised a Waste Minimisation Campaign 2020 throughout October to December 2020, to encourage a sustainable lifestyle among its staff and public by actively minimising waste in their daily routine and in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities, SDG 12 – Sustainable Consumption and Production, SDG 13 – Climate Action and SDG 14 – Life Below Water.

The campaign was held in conjunction with environmental commemorative days such as the World Clean Up Day, International Coastal Clean Up Day, National Environment Day and the National Recycling Day in the spirit of sustainability and to encourage responsible consumption and production among staff and the public via virtual platforms particularly in view of the current pandemic.

The campaign kickstarted in October with the IOI-Active Citizens: Clean Up Challenge 2020 in collaboration with Reef Check Malaysia whereby a webinar was held on marine debris and plastic pollution, the importance of protecting coral reefs and marine ecosystem, and action that can be taken by individuals on a daily basis. By organising the IOI-Active Citizens: Clean Up Challenge 2020, IOIPG encouraged volunteerism among its staff to take an active role in the community and support the efforts of local NGOs. The challenge saw participants collecting 3,795 items weighing 352.2kg. The top five items collected were plastic bottle caps, beverage cans, plastic bottles, plastic bags and cigarette butts.
