Johor Bahru, 18 August 2017: The Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MICCI) celebrated its 180th anniversary in a joyous fashion in commemoration of its formation in the year 1837 at the Holiday Villa, Johor Bahru.
Throughout its long and illustrious history, MICCI has had the welfare of the business community as its principal objective and have since borne witness to monumental changes that have taken shape in the Malaysian business landscape. Today, MICCI proudly advocates the interest of a multi-sectorial business society representing more than 900 corporate Members in over 30 nationalities.
This momentous accomplishment would not have been possible without the significant support and tireless involvement of its Members, and the cooperation from the Malaysian Government and its capable leaders, whom to this day continue to be the pedestal for MICCI to seek counsel and exchange intelligence for the prosperity of the nation.
The Chamber was particularly pleased that the milestone celebration took place in Johor Bahru, providing an ideal setting for its Members in Kuala Lumpur and Johor to network and explore mutual business alliances.
MICCI President, Datuk Wira Jalilah Baba in her keynote address, stated that since MICCI’s presence in Johor was established in 1989, the Chamber has been privileged to be part of the State’s thriving economy.
“The business community in Johor has been reveling in the positive advancement of the State over the past decade, in attestation to the diverse growth in manufacturing, infrastructure, education, tourism and services, all the while adopting pro-business and investment friendly policies.”
The gala dinner hosted 65 tables of guests from various industries with RM100 pledged from the sale of every table to The Hope Garden, an orphanage which was adopted as the charity beneficiary for the night. The Hope Garden also sold handmade pillows and cakes during the dinner, with Ms Christina Tee, MICCI Southern Branch Chairlady leading the fundraiser campaign which managed to raise RM33,000 for the benefit of the orphanage. The Chamber was equally thrilled to celebrate the hallmark occasion with a host of its distinguished Members that have journeyed with the Chamber for over a quarter of a century. Among the Chamber’s longest-standing Members present on the evening were HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad (130 years) and Sime Darby Berhad (100 years). The accolade for service was exceptionally merited to the many individuals and committees that have and continue to play an integral role in the progress of the country’s trade and industry.
MICCI cherished the opportunity to recognize and complimented its Members, government leaders, business associates and friends in attendance for continuously supporting the Chamber in all its endeavors to create a favorable and healthy business environment.
Looking ahead, the Chamber anticipates more flourishing years with strong cooperation between the government and private sector in a manner conducive to national aspirations.
