YAN, Oct 31– The Kedah government is determined to turn Pulau Bunting here into a port despite the private sector’s proposal to build a coal-fired power station on the island.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Tun Dr Mahathir said the proposed port could benefit industries in Gurun, especially the automotive sector.
“This (port) is a long-term project. Yan has a lot of potentials besides tourism and industrial development,” he told reporters after a working visit here Saturday.
However, he said the proposal to develop a new port on Pulau Bunting is still at an early stage.
Mukhriz said the state government would capitalise on the construction a road between Pulau Bunting and Gurun by the federal government by developing the surrounding areas.
The construction of the 18-kilometre road is now 18% completed.
