24 July, KULAI – The state government is mulling the possibility of privatising rental collection for People’s Housing Project (PPR) by outsourcing it to private companies.

Johor Housing and Rural Development Committee chairman Dzulkefly Ahmad said after privatising rental collection for five PPR projects in Johor Baru, the government’s collection rate increased to 70%.

He said taking this into consideration, the government plans to outsource rental collection to more of such companies.

Dzulkefly was speaking to the media after officiating the International Conference of Creative and Innovative Technology and Education 2018 (i-CITE) at Senai, here on Tuesday.

He said many tenants had failed to pay their rent, despite renting for only RM124 a month.

Dzulkefly added that some tenants had failed to pay their rent for about five years.

Meanwhile, he said some qualified PPR tenants need only pay half of the unpaid rent, following a decision by the state exco meeting last week.

“This is to fulfil one of the promises in the Pakatan Harapan manifesto on helping the poor and marginalised.”

Qualified tenants are those in the hardcore poor group and those eligible for welfare aid.
