KUCHING, 5 June: The Sarawak government is set to redevelop the area around Jalan Gambir and Jalan Market near the Kuching Waterfront into a new business district.
Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said the project was in line with the government’s plan to further the state’s digital economy and development of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) system for the Sarawak capital.
“We have long-term plans to redevelop these areas. This does not mean we will tear down (the existing buildings) but we will provide new facilities there.
“This process is known as the urban renewal programme, where we have to redevelop certain areas which become new business districts where all the facilities and services sectors will be upgraded,” he said.
He said this during a press conference after handing out Aidilfitri contributions for the Satok state constituency here, today.
Abang Johari, who is also Satok assemblyman, said he was confident the redevelopment would attract more foreign investors, as well as improve the existing service-based industries in the areas.
“It’s still in the planning stage at the moment, and God willing, within five to ten years we will change the face of the area,” he said.
