31 July, KUALA LUMPUR – The Finance Ministry tabled the Goods and Services Tax (GST) (Repeal) Bill 2018 for its first reading in the Dewan Rakyat today.

The bill, tabled by Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Amiruddin Hamzah, seek to provide that any liability incurred may be enforced or any goods and services tax due, overpaid or erroneously paid may be collected, refunded or remitted under the repealed Act as if the repealed Act had not been repealed.

Amiruddin also tabled four other related bills for their first readings, namely, the Sales Tax Bill 2018; Service Tax Bill 2018; Customs (Amendment) Bill 2018 and the Free Zone (Amendment) Bill 2018, to pave way for the implementation of the Sale and Service Tax (SST).

Under the proposed Sales Tax and Service Tax bills, the minister may, by order published in the gazette, fix the rate of tax to be charged and levied and vary or amend the rate of the tax.

The Pakatan Harapan government wanted to reintroduce SST this September after the GST was zero-rated from June 1, in line with the promise of its general election manifesto.
