1.3 million public transport ridership daily by end of 2017

November 20, PUTRAJAYA – The Transport Ministry is confident of achieving 1.3 million public transport ridership daily in the Klang Valley by year end.

Transport minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said currently the ridership stands at 1.2 million daily.

He said the modal share of public transportation within Greater KL in 2010 was only at 10 per cent and increased to 23 per cent this year.

“We had set ambitious goals to achieve a modal share target of 40 per cent for land public transport in urban areas by 2030. Through the concerted effort, the modal share had marked a significant progress,” he said in his speech at the Transport Ministry’s Gala Dinner, here tonight.

Liow also noted that the ministry had achieved a score of 104 per cent key performance index (KPI) until October this year.

He said about 665,875 cruise passengers had arrived at our ports till October this year compared with the target of 577,500.

“This shows our strong economic growth and our capability to handle the ports effectively and efficiently. We will have to work hard to achieve a higher KPI,” Liow said.

He said the ministry also plans to reduce accident rates from the targeted 2.5 to 2.29 deaths per 10,000 vehicles registration by this year.

Earlier in his speech, Liow said Malaysia once again will contest to retain its International Maritime Organisation (IMO) for the seventh term consecutively by year end.

He also hoped the media would continuously support and help the ministry to disseminate information on about the ministry and the government’s efforts.

At the event, Liow also gave a certificate of appreciation to the Media, including Malaysia National News Agency (Bernama).
