How to turn your home into a love nest for Valentine’s Day

Is it just us, or are things actually getting hot in here?

The official day of love is just around the corner, and not everyone is lucky enough to be living in a space that looks like a five-star hotel honeymoon suite. But surely there’s a way to achieve home romance in a liveable family home.

Opting for small, simple projects like setting up some candles or plants can make any space sexier at the drop of a hat, or, if you’re looking for a more permanent fix, consider installing a breakfast nook, upgrading your bathtub for a Jacuzzi soaker, or changing your decorative pillows for something softer.

Here are five ways to turn your house into a love nest without overdosing on the cheese.

1. Create a canopy

So that IKEA bed frame you’ve had for years is cheap, comfortable and practical, but not exactly sexy. It’s boring and it doesn’t accentuate romance in your bedroom. One way to transform your rather dull bedroom into a sensual chamber is to add a canopy around your bed. The best part of this trick is that it doesn’t break your bank as you can DIY it. All you need to do is take some long sheer curtains and hang it around your bed frame and you will immediately get a sultry fort for adults. To take romance up a notch, try adding some candles or lampshades to give that dim lighting effect.

2. Add a touch of greenery

Bring the outside in and increase your romantic vibes tenfold. We are not talking about roses or a vase of fresh flowers, but rather large, leafy palms in planters that sit on the floor or side table. Believe it or not, adding a touch of greenery to your space immediately elevates the mood of the area. And for certain houses, that is all it takes to give the space a romantic makeover. If you’re on a budget, this is also the best option for you as finding a leafy plant that fits your budget is extremely possible.

3. Change your lighting

The lighting of a room goes a long way to setting the mood. It can go from romantic, to sterile real quick. A combination of lighting and natural sunlight will help to change the ambience of a home instantly. This balance allows you to easily control and create different moods. For a romantic mood setting, put every light you can on a dimmer to control the mood of your space. But if you’re looking for a total transformation and have the budget to do so, this is the perfect time to purchase a chandelier that suits your house. But if you’re not, then candles will do the trick. The flickering light alone is enough to create a dreamy ambiance.

4. Pile on the pillows

Throw pillows, whether placed on a bed, couch or nook, will take a room’s look from comfortable to cosy. It immediately invites a long cuddling session, watching your favourite show with your favourite person. Apart from the traditional candlelit dinner, other simple way to induce romance is to get comfortable on your couch surrounded with soft, feathery pillows binge watching on Netflix.

5. Spa and steam

This might sound slightly over the top, but we say you either go big or go home. This Valentine’s Day is your chance to turn your master bathroom into your own spa sanctuary for you and your partner. A little tea light candles, bubble bath, dim the lights and put in the slow music and you have yourself a DIY sauna or spa that fit the royal family. Time to elevate romance in a budget way.
